Charlie Kirk was shot in the neck on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University during his American Comeback Tour. A 33-hour manhunt followed, ending when 22-year-old Tyler Robinson was turned in by his father. DNA evidence and leaked group chats tied him to the crime.

Just hours before his arrest, Robinson reportedly confessed in a Discord chat: “Hey guys, I have bad news for you all. It was me at UVU yesterday. im sorry for all of this. im surrendering through a sheriff friend in a few moments.”

At his first court appearance on September 16, Robinson, wearing an anti-suicide vest, spoke only three words: “Tyler James Robinson.” Judge Tony Graf ordered him held without bail. He currently faces seven charges, including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering.

Prosecutors confirmed they will seek the death penalty. Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray said Robinson told investigators, “There’s too much evil and the guy [Kirk] spreads too much hate.”

The trial will weigh “aggravated factors,” including targeting Kirk for his politics and the shooting occurring in front of children. Robinson’s next hearing is set for September 29.
