A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Authorities in Kamchatka quickly issued a tsunami warning, while Alaska’s Aleutian Islands were placed under a temporary tsunami advisory that was later canceled.
Officials confirmed there is “no tsunami threat” to California or the U.S. West Coast. Hawaii is being closely monitored, but it is not under immediate danger.
So far, no damage has been reported in the affected areas. The quake triggered several aftershocks, with the strongest recorded at magnitude 5.8.
Emergency services in Kamchatka were placed on high alert. Inspections of public buildings and residential areas were carried out to ensure safety.
