In 2019, Kentucky homeowner Jason Whitaker noticed a strange burning smell in his house. After checking every outlet and appliance, he discovered the source — a spiral light bulb filled with ladybugs. The insects had gathered inside over several years of use, turning the bulb into a serious fire hazard.

Jason immediately replaced all his bulbs and warned others on Facebook: “These light bulbs will burn your house down… Please check yours.” His post went viral, shared more than 430,000 times, as many people reported similar issues with older spiral bulbs.

Experts explained that while compact fluorescent (CFL) or spiral bulbs are safe when used properly, trapped insects or debris can cause overheating. “Heat combined with blockage can become a fire hazard,” they noted.

Fire safety specialists urge homeowners to regularly inspect light fixtures for “overheating, discoloration, or unusual smells.”
