Legendary Figure Passes, Leaving Global Grief

Rick Davies, the legendary co-founder of Supertramp, “defined the sound of a generation with his voice, piano, and songwriting,” shaping the band into one of rock’s most distinctive names. His work on timeless hits like The Logical Song, Goodbye Stranger, and Take the Long Way Home continues to resonate with fans worldwide.

Born in Swindon, England, Davies showed early musical talent despite struggling in school. As his mother recalled, “Music was the only thing he was any good at at school.” That passion led him to form Supertramp with Roger Hodgson in 1969.

The band quickly rose to fame in the 1970s, and their album Breakfast in America brought global success. The record produced major hits, earned Grammy nominations, and secured their place in music history.

Though Hodgson eventually left due to creative differences, Davies carried on, keeping Supertramp active through the ’80s and later reviving it in the ’90s with new members.

Beyond his music, Davies was known for his warmth and dedication. He shared over fifty years with his wife, Sue, who stood by him through all of life’s challenges, both personal and professional.
