The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a tragic helicopter crash in Montana that claimed the lives of Illinois gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey’s son, Zachary, his wife, Kelsey, and their two children, 12-year-old Vada and 7-year-old Samuel. Their 10-year-old son, Finn, survived because he traveled separately.
“Darren and Cindy are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss. They are finding comfort in their faith, their family, and the prayers of so many who love and care for them,” the Bailey campaign said, asking for privacy as they grieve.
The family had been in Montana for a farming convention and traveled in their four-seater Robinson R66 helicopter. The crash occurred near Ekalaka, Montana, around 7:22 p.m., and Zachary, who was piloting, was described as experienced and deeply faithful.
Bailey’s running mate, Aaron Del Mar, said, “I’m heartbroken… it’s soul-crushing.” He praised Zachary’s dedication and kindness, recalling that Zach once used his pilot’s license to deliver food and medicine in South America.
The Bailey family, known for their Christian values and community service, has long managed a large farming operation and private Christian school in Illinois. Del Mar added, “It’s a very sad loss… not only for the Bailey family and campaign, but the entire community.”
