Sleeping on your left side can bring incredible health benefits

After a long day, most people fall asleep without thinking about how their sleeping position affects their health. Experts say that “resting on your left side can offer a surprising range of benefits for digestion, circulation, and even organ function.”

For those with acid reflux or heartburn, this position helps because “your stomach stays lower than your esophagus,” preventing acid from rising during the night. Gravity keeps digestive fluids where they belong, easing discomfort and improving sleep.

Sleeping on the left also benefits the spleen and liver. The spleen “acts as a filter for blood,” and lying on the left improves circulation to it. The liver, located on the right, isn’t compressed in this position, allowing it to “function more freely,” aiding detoxification and balance.

Pregnant women are often advised to sleep on their left side since it “improves circulation to the heart” and ensures oxygen and nutrients reach both mother and baby. It also relieves organ pressure and reduces swelling.

While left-side sleeping has many advantages, it may not suit everyone—especially those with shoulder pain. Experts suggest alternating sides or using pillows for support. Ultimately, comfort matters most, but a small change in position could bring big health benefits.
