10 Things You Shouldn’t Be Storing on Your Kitchen Countertop

Many people keep everyday items on their countertops because it feels practical, but the narrator admits this only created “a cluttered and chaotic space” and even caused wasted food. Over time, they learned that several common items are better stored elsewhere.

Bread is one of the most misplaced items. Leaving it out makes it dry out or mold quickly. The article notes that “a bread box or refrigerator is a much better alternative.” Knife blocks also take up space and can trap bacteria. Using “a magnetic wall strip or drawer insert” keeps knives clean and easy to reach without crowding the counter.

Small appliances like toasters and blenders also cause unnecessary clutter. Unless something is used daily, such as “a coffee maker,” it should be stored in a cabinet. Some produce spoils more quickly when exposed to heat or light. Foods like avocados and potatoes last longer in a pantry or refrigerator instead of sitting out.

Spices lose their flavor when kept near heat sources. Even though they’re tempting to display, it’s better to store them in a drawer or cabinet “away from the stove.” Paperwork and mail only add visual mess, so keeping them in a different area of the home helps maintain order.

Finally, items like cutting boards, pet food bowls, coffee beans, and cookbooks don’t need to take up counter space. Storing these in cabinets or drawers creates a cleaner, easier-to-use kitchen. Thoughtful organization results in “a more pleasant cooking experience.”
