Gary Sinise shared the heartbreaking news that his 33-year-old son, McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise, died after a long fight with chordoma, a rare bone cancer. In a message posted on his foundation’s website and Instagram, he revealed that Mac’s diagnosis came in 2018, shortly after his wife, Moira, learned she had stage three breast cancer. While her treatment succeeded, Mac’s illness “progressed relentlessly,” eventually taking his mobility and placing immense strain on his body and spirit.
Sinise wrote openly about the grief of losing a child, saying, “As parents, it is so difficult losing a child.” He also reflected on the many Gold Star families he has met through his work with veterans, noting that he now understands their pain on a deeper level. Even as he mourned, he shared a sense of peace knowing Mac’s suffering had ended, and he praised his son’s courage, saying Mac “never gave up.”
Messages of support quickly poured in. Angie Harmon reminded him that the family is “deeply loved by so many,” while Alyssa Milano sent prayers and strength. The widespread sympathy reflected the respect Sinise has earned through decades of service and compassion.
Despite years of surgeries and paralysis, Mac continued creating music. A USC graduate, he worked at the Gary Sinise Foundation and performed in the Lt. Dan Band. He completed an album, Resurrection & Revival, which his family will release as part of his legacy.
Mac was laid to rest on January 5. Sinise’s tribute honors a young man remembered for resilience, creativity, and extraordinary strength in the face of unimaginable hardship.
