Amy Schumer recalls the hilariously awkward filming of her comedic scene with John Cena

Amy Schumer often retells the filming of her Trainwreck scenes with John Cena using playful exaggeration. She once joked that Cena was “actually inside her” and said his body “felt like a refrigerator was on top of me.” She also teased his physique with lines like “That butt is like a whole universe… It’s not even human,” using shock humor and self-deprecation, even claiming she just lay there “doing what I normally do during sex—just lay there.” Her stories highlight how unromantic and awkward movie intimacy really feels behind the scenes.

Cena has always embraced the jokes. On Conan, he explained the scene was meant to be uncomfortable: “They wanted it to be awkward, so we delivered.” On Club Shay Shay, he described the reality of filming—catering tables nearby, crew watching, technicians adjusting equipment—saying, “It was really embarrassing.” Nothing about the moment felt private or glamorous, but he praised Schumer for keeping things light and professional, helping reduce the real awkwardness.

Schumer continued the bit on Instagram by writing, “That scene meant a lot to me, I was really into it… and I’m in love with you,” adding another joke to their ongoing back-and-forth. Their shared humor and willingness to lean into the absurdity helped make their on-screen chemistry memorable.

Their stories resonate because they expose what audiences rarely see: intimacy scenes are choreographed, technical, and usually very unromantic. By speaking openly—Schumer through exaggeration, Cena through honesty—they show that these scenes rely on trust, communication, and a sense of humor far more than glamour.
