At Least Four Dead in Public Shooting as Community

On Saturday, December 13, 2025, what began as “an ordinary winter afternoon at Brown University” turned into chaos when gunfire erupted inside the Barus & Holley engineering building. Students and staff fled or hid as emergency calls reported “an active shooter and multiple victims.” Police later confirmed that two students were killed and nine others were wounded, several critically, before the gunman fled on foot, leaving the campus in shock.

In response, Brown activated emergency alerts urging everyone to “shelter in place.” The campus went into lockdown as police, medical teams, and helicopters secured the area. Classes and exams were canceled, counseling services expanded, and students huddled in dorms while families anxiously waited for updates. When the lockdown lifted, the campus fell silent, marked by candles, notes, and vigils honoring the victims.

Law enforcement launched a large investigation involving Providence police, state authorities, and the FBI. Officers collected forensic evidence and reviewed surveillance footage, releasing images of a person of interest. Despite numerous tips and a reward of “up to $50,000,” no immediate arrest was made, heightening fear across the community.

The case grew more complex when investigators examined a possible link to the killing of MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro in Brookline, Massachusetts. While officials stressed that “no definitive link had been established,” agencies began sharing information across state lines.

As the investigation continued, Brown faced hard questions about safety, trauma, and preparedness. Town halls, added security, and mental health support followed. The tragedy underscored that even places of learning are vulnerable, leaving lasting emotional scars as the community searched for healing and justice.
