Early Thursday around 7 a.m., Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, about 24 miles north of Detroit, went into lockdown after reports of an active shooter. Police responded quickly and issued a shelter-in-place order as staff barricaded themselves inside the hospital, creating a tense and confusing scene.
A 25-year-old man was injured after being shot twice in the arm. He was treated and is now in stable condition. Authorities said the incident appeared to be isolated and described it as a “targeted attack” between coworkers. The suspect, identified as a hospital employee, reportedly fired five shots in the parking lot, with one bullet striking a nearby vehicle.
After the shooting, police launched a search for the suspect. According to 7 News Detroit, he was later arrested at a home in Macomb Township after surrendering peacefully. Reports say he answered a call from police and followed instructions to exit the home. Officials have not yet released his name.
Inside the hospital, employees described moments of fear and uncertainty during the lockdown. Many were unsure what was happening as police secured the area and searched for the suspect.
One medical assistant shared her experience, saying, “I was getting into the parking lot, getting ready to walk in, and another coworker was screaming to get in my car—there was an active shooter.” She also recalled seeing officers moving through the garage and added, “It’s scary. You go to your workplace thinking you’re going to be safe.”
