It is with heavy hearts we report the sad news about this brilliant actor who gave us so much

John Cunningham, the widely respected character actor known for his steady presence on Broadway, film, and television, died Tuesday at age 93 at his home in Rye, New York, according to his family. His career spanned nearly seven decades and was defined by consistency, humility, and devotion to acting rather than fame.

Often called a “working actor’s actor,” Cunningham appeared in 15 Broadway productions, including Company, Cabaret, 1776, Titanic, The Sisters Rosensweig, and Six Degrees of Separation. Reflecting his philosophy, he once said, “In theater you get to do it again, and again, and again. My whole pleasure is trying to get better… Be prepared to be alive.”

His most celebrated role was Flan Kittredge in Six Degrees of Separation, which he originated on Broadway and later played in the 1993 film. Film audiences also recognized him as the father figures in Mystic Pizza and Dead Poets Society, with additional credits including Nixon, The Jackal, Shaft, and School Ties. He also delivered memorable voice work in In & Out and Starship Troopers.

Cunningham appeared frequently on television, including eight roles on Law & Order, as well as 30 Rock, The Good Wife, and Damages. In 1986, The New York Times aptly described him as “ever-reliable and ever-employed.”

Born in 1932, Cunningham trained at Yale Drama School after Army service and remained active on stage until age 80. He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Carolyn, their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His legacy endures through the quiet respect he earned across stage and screen.
