Jeep plows into Amish buggy near Berne — father airlifted, multiple children

Screams cut through the dark Indiana countryside as a quiet Amish buggy ride turned into sudden chaos.” A late-night trip on State Road 218 near Berne ended violently when a Jeep struck a horse-drawn buggy from behind, destroying it within seconds.

The buggy was carrying nine Amish passengers. “Seven people were injured, most of them children.” The impact threw passengers onto the roadway as first responders rushed to the scene, replacing the silence of the rural area with sirens and flashing emergency lights. Several victims were transported to nearby hospitals, and a medical helicopter was called to assist with the most serious injuries.

Authorities are now investigating what caused the crash. The Jeep driver remained at the scene, and officials confirmed that blood tests are being conducted as part of the investigation. Emergency crews worked quickly to stabilize victims and secure the roadway.

“For the Amish community, the crash is more than an isolated incident.” The collision underscores the ongoing danger of sharing high-speed roads with modern vehicles while traveling in fragile, horse-drawn buggies, particularly at night on poorly lit rural highways.

As the injured continue to recover, the community is left with renewed concern and lingering pain. The wreck stands as a stark reminder of how quickly tradition and modern traffic can collide, often with lasting and life-altering consequences.
