Fire experts warn air fryers should be unplugged before bed. Crumbs, grease buildup

The kitchen is filled with appliances that make daily life easier, but they also carry hidden risks. Among them, “one small and familiar device stands out as a surprising hazard.” The toaster, though simple and common, “should always be unplugged before going to bed or leaving the house” to reduce the risk of fire and electrical accidents.

Because toasters are used so often, many people underestimate them. Yet “fire safety experts consistently list toasters among the most common causes of kitchen fires.” Their design includes “exposed heating elements” that reach very high temperatures quickly, making them more dangerous than they appear.

A major risk comes from crumb buildup. Bread crumbs collect inside the toaster, dry out, and become flammable. If they ignite, especially at night when no one is watching, a small problem can turn into a serious fire before it’s detected.

Leaving a toaster plugged in when not in use adds another layer of danger. Power surges, worn cords, or overloaded circuits can cause overheating or sparks, even if the toaster hasn’t been turned on.

Fortunately, prevention is simple. “One of the simplest and most effective safety habits is unplugging the toaster immediately after use.” Regular cleaning and safe placement also help. While “unplugging your toaster may feel like a small and insignificant habit, but its impact on home safety is substantial,” offering protection, peace of mind, and reduced fire risk.
