This Stuttering Boy First Saw a Toilet Flush at 5 — At 66, He’s a Millionaire TV Host & Devoted Family Man

Steve Harvey’s journey from poverty to fame is a powerful story of resilience and faith. Born on January 17, 1957, in West Virginia, Steve grew up poor in Cleveland, Ohio. Despite the challenges, he dreamed big, writing at age ten that he would be on TV one day. He didn’t achieve this until he was 38, overcoming stuttering, homelessness, and financial struggles.

Steve’s journey began with an open mic comedy night in 1985, where he stunned the audience. However, his decision to pursue comedy led to homelessness, living in his car, and barely surviving on $50 a week. He described hitting rock bottom, saying, “I hid in a hotel washroom to wash up, and it dawned on me that I was at my lowest point ever.”

Despite these hardships, Steve never gave up. In 1990, he won a national comedy competition, which led to a breakthrough role on “Showtime at the Apollo.” From there, his career soared, and today, he is a New York Times best-selling author, Emmy Award-winning entertainer, and successful businessman.

Steve attributes his success to his faith, saying, “My imagination didn’t even go this big,” and he continues to share his story to inspire others never to give up on their dreams.
