My Stepmother ‘Gifted’ Me an Old, Smelly Couch — When She Saw What I Did With It, She Demanded $2,500 From Me

Nicole’s stepmother, Susan, offered her a “gift” that left her stunned. Expecting something thoughtful, Nicole was horrified to find an old, foul-smelling couch that seemed like it had been pulled from the trash. Still, not wanting to upset her father, she reluctantly accepted it.

Determined not to let Susan’s passive-aggressive gesture get the better of her, Nicole decided to restore the couch. She eliminated the stench with a homemade deodorizer and tackled the stains using a mixture of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap. After repairing the rips with fabric from a thrift store, buttons, and frills, the couch looked like it belonged in a designer showroom.
Proud of her hard work, Nicole listed the couch for $5,000 on a social media marketplace, thinking it was a joke. To her surprise, Maggie, a woman from a wealthy neighborhood, was eager to buy it for her art studio. “This couch is a masterpiece,” Maggie exclaimed, praising Nicole’s creativity and craftsmanship.
When Susan discovered the sale, she was furious, demanding half of the money. “The couch was mine!” Susan argued. Nicole stood her ground, responding that the profit was a result of her restoration efforts. Susan stormed off, vowing Nicole would regret it.

As Nicole braced for a confrontation with her father, she felt victorious. The couch had become more than just a piece of furniture—it symbolized her ability to rise above manipulation and turn it into a personal and financial triumph.
