How Your Feet Could Be Signaling Heart Problems and Clogged Arteries

Your feet might not be the first thing you associate with heart health, but they reveal a lot about your cardiovascular system. “Your feet might not be the first place you think of when you hear ‘heart health,’ but they can tell you a lot about your cardiovascular system.” Symptoms like pain, numbness, or swelling may indicate serious heart problems or clogged arteries.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) occurs when plaque builds up, leading to clogged arteries. This causes leg and foot pain, cramping, and in severe cases, even limb loss. Difficulty standing or frequent cramps are signs to seek medical screening.

Poor circulation deprives tissues of oxygen, causing pain, tingling, and slower wound healing. Plaque buildup and weak heart function also cause swelling in the feet.

Preventing PAD and coronary artery disease involves regular exercise, a balanced diet, managing blood sugar, and avoiding smoking. A healthy heart promotes better blood flow to your extremities.

Maintaining heart health improves your quality of life and keeps both your heart and feet in good shape.
