Girl abandoned at birth for her looks wants to prove the world wrong – she now models for Vogue

Albinism is a rare genetic condition affecting melanin production, resulting in light or no color in skin, hair, and eyes. Unfortunately, individuals with albinism often face stigma, particularly in underdeveloped regions.

Sixteen years ago, a girl with albinism was born in China and abandoned by her parents due to her snow-white skin. She ended up in an orphanage, where she was named Xueli, meaning “snow white and beautiful.” Later adopted by a loving Dutch family, her life took an inspiring turn.

At age 11, Xueli was discovered by a Hong Kong photographer for a campaign called *Perfect Imperfections*. “She asked if I wanted to join her fashion show in Hong Kong,” Xueli told the BBC, describing it as an “amazing experience.” This launched her modeling career, leading to the cover of *Vogue Italia* in June 2019.

Despite her success, Xueli remains aware of the harsh realities many with albinism face, such as being targeted for their body parts due to superstitious beliefs. “I’m lucky I was only abandoned,” she said.

Through modeling, Xueli raises awareness about albinism. “It’s a genetic disorder, not a curse,” she emphasizes. She advocates for language that respects individuality: “Say ‘a person with albinism,’ not ‘an albino.’”

Xueli’s mission is clear: “I’m not going to accept that children are being murdered because of their albinism. I want to change the world.” Her courage inspires us to celebrate diversity and work for inclusion.
