Mary Lou Retton Has “Pretty Scary Setback” While Fighting Rare Form of Pneumonia

Olympic champion Mary Lou Retton is currently battling a life-threatening condition in the intensive care unit (ICU). Her daughter, Shayla, provided an update on her mother’s situation, stating, “We were so excited, seeing so much progress and then yesterday we had a pretty scary setback.” Mary Lou Retton, who gained fame with her incredible gymnastic performances and perfect 10s, has been in the hospital for a week, receiving care from top-notch medical professionals.

Shayla also emphasized the importance of respecting their family’s privacy during this challenging time. She mentioned that it’s a day-by-day process, and they hope for the public’s understanding and support. She added, “She’s been treated by the best of the best professionals here, and it has been such a blessing to have their hands on her, so please continue the prayers and we cannot thank you enough for the love and support that you guys have shown.”

Meanwhile, another of Mary Lou Retton’s daughters, McKenna Kelley, disclosed the seriousness of her mother’s condition. She explained that her mother had contracted a “very rare form of pneumonia,” shedding light on the gravity of the situation. Mary Lou Retton, who is renowned for her remarkable athletic career, including her perfect 10s in gymnastics and her appearance on the iconic Wheaties box, is now in a fierce battle for her life. Her legacy extends beyond the world of sports, as she made high-profile appearances in TV shows such as Glee and Dancing With the Stars.
