5 Stroke Symptoms That Can Be Lethal And Why You Need To Act ASAP

Strokes are the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. and a leading cause of disability. Women are especially at risk, with one in five affected, and stroke is the third leading cause of death among them. There are two types of strokes: ischemic, caused by blocked blood flow to the brain, and hemorrhagic, caused by bleeding in the brain. Both can lead to death or permanent brain damage.

**Signs of Stroke**
Recognizing stroke symptoms early is vital. The CDC lists five sudden warning signs:
– **Numbness/weakness:** Especially on one side of the face, arm, or leg.
– **Confusion:** Trouble speaking or understanding speech.
– **Vision problems:** Difficulty seeing in one or both eyes.
– **Dizziness or loss of balance:** Trouble walking or coordinating.
– **Severe headache:** Without a known cause.

If any of these occur, call 911 immediately.

**Acting F.A.S.T.**
Quick action saves lives. Use the F.A.S.T. test:
– **Face:** Check for drooping.
– **Arms:** Look for weakness.
– **Speech:** Listen for slurring.
– **Time:** Call 911 without delay.

**Stroke Risk Factors**
While age, gender, and genetics play a role, lifestyle factors like smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and inactivity significantly increase risk. Staying informed about your risks and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help prevent strokes.
