Why jeans have a tiny pocket inside the bigger one

The small pocket inside the front right pocket of jeans, often overlooked, was originally designed to hold pocket watches. Introduced by Levi Strauss & Co. in the late 1800s, this feature provided cowboys and workers a secure place for their timepieces.

As pocket watches became obsolete, the pocket found new uses. Levi’s notes that it has been called the “coin pocket, match pocket, and ticket pocket,” among other names.

Today, while its original purpose is largely historical, this small pocket remains a characteristic feature of jean design, symbolizing the garment’s rich heritage.
