New passport ban in the US is the first policy to enforce Trump’s ‘two genders’ claim

In his speech, President Donald Trump stated the government would recognize “only two genders,” upsetting many in the LGBTQ+ community. His executive order, “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” defines gender strictly as male or female, rejecting gender identity.

The policy mandates federal forms and communications to focus solely on biological sex. As part of the rollout, Secretary of State Marco Rubio removed the “X” gender marker option from passports, reversing a policy by former Secretary Antony Blinken that supported non-binary individuals.

Additionally, Trump’s administration plans to end federal programs supporting gender transition and gender-affirming care, further aligning with its stance on biological sex.
