Keith Urban, the renowned country music sensation, grappled with a tumultuous battle against addiction. His path to recovery was profoundly influenced by the unwavering support of his wife, Nicole Kidman, who played a pivotal role in turning his life around not just once but on multiple occasions. Urban’s upbringing in a household marked by an alcoholic father left him vulnerable to the perils of alcoholism, a realization he eventually confronted.
The first time Urban sought help was in 1998 when he checked into rehab. A decade later, in 2006, he found himself needing rehabilitation again due to escalating drinking issues, particularly while on tour. He candidly expressed, “I’m allergic to it. I break out in cuffs.”
Remarkably, even though Urban and Kidman had been married for only a year at the time, Kidman stood by him and played an instrumental role in his journey to recovery. Urban’s gratitude towards Kidman was evident as he revealed, “I was very, very blessed to have Nic call an intervention on me.” In a gesture of unwavering support, Kidman flew back from her movie filming to gather their friends and stage an intervention.
Urban’s second stint in rehab took place at the Betty Ford Center in California in October 2006, and by January 2007, he announced his successful completion of the treatment. Reflecting on his past, Urban admitted that he wished he had embraced sobriety sooner. He recognized that he had not been living up to his full potential and felt constrained, remarking, “I was enslaved, living a very, very small life.”
