Air traffic control audio describes moments after American Airlines flight collides in mid-air with helicopter

Harrowing air traffic control audio reveals more about the American Airlines crash over Washington, D.C. The PSA Airlines flight, carrying 60 passengers and four crew, collided with a BlackHawk helicopter carrying three military personnel near Ronald Reagan National Airport just before 9:00 p.m. Both aircraft plunged into the Potomac River, with 18 bodies recovered so far.

American Airlines confirmed the incident, stating, “Our concern is for the passengers and crew on board the aircraft,” and urged families to call 800-679-8215 for information.

CBS News audio captured a dispatcher confirming, “The accident happened in the river. Both the helicopter and the plane crashed in the river.”

Eyewitness Jimmy Mazeo recalled seeing “white flares” in the sky before emergency crews arrived. “It was insane,” he said. “I’m praying for all the people involved.”

President Trump was briefed on the “terrible accident,” offering prayers and thanking first responders.
