Mexico’s president hits back at Trump’s ‘Gulf of America’ controversy with her own name suggestion

Donald Trump, within 24 hours of his second term, signed an order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America,” calling it “an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation.” Google complied, but the change sparked backlash from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Sheinbaum dismissed the renaming, stating, “For the entire world, it will always be the Gulf of Mexico.” In a news conference, she humorously suggested renaming the U.S. as “Mexican America,” pointing to a 1607 map and saying, “It sounds nice, doesn’t it?”

Google clarified that the displayed name varies by location—local users see their official name, while others see both names. Despite Trump’s decree, Sheinbaum insisted the internationally recognized name remains unchanged.
