In order to understand the inner workings of the mind, psychologists have long employed optical illusions. Upon first glance, what do you notice? However, who says that in order to find the answers you want, you must see a psychologist?
As kids, we stared for hours at *Magic Eye* books, trying to uncover hidden images. These illusions “captivated readers worldwide and spent a total of 73 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List.” Our fascination deepens as we grow. The viral 2015 Dress Debate (blue and black or white and gold?) showed how optical illusions still spark heated emotions.
Like famous personality tests, illusions help reveal our inner traits. “By doing this, we may determine which patterns and images grab the attention of each viewer… and make inferences about our personalities.”
For example, seeing a skull may suggest you’re feeling “emotionally and mentally worn out,” while noticing pillars could mean you “want to live your life in a region where you feel comfortable.” In contrast, spotting men between pillars might show you thrive on adventure.
V.S. Ramachandran says in *The Tell-Tale Brain*, illusions “reveal aspects of our distinct human character.” Curious? Take a closer look—what you notice first might reveal more than you think.
