Physically Healthy 28-Year-Old Explains Why She’s Chosen To Be Euthanised Next Month

**Zoraya ter Beek, 28, from the Netherlands, plans to undergo euthanasia next month, though she is physically healthy.** Her decision has sparked global debate over the ethics of euthanasia, especially for people with psychiatric conditions. In the Netherlands, euthanasia is legal for those facing “unbearable suffering with no prospect of improvement.” Ter Beek qualifies due to severe depression, autism, and borderline personality disorder. She says her suffering makes life intolerable: *”It’s not that I want to die, but I just don’t want to live like this.”*

Some critics fear that the system may approve such cases too easily, especially when it comes to mental illness. But ter Beek sees euthanasia not as giving up, but as finding relief: *”To me, it’s a form of liberation.”

She plans to die peacefully on her sofa and has arranged for a cremation to spare her boyfriend the burden. While she admits she’s afraid, she says the choice brings her a sense of control. Her story highlights ongoing questions around mental health, personal choice, and the limits of medical intervention.
