A devastating Air India crash on 12 June claimed 270 lives, including people on the ground, after the London-bound plane crashed shortly after take-off in Ahmedabad. Among 242 onboard, only one man survived—British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh—who escaped through an emergency exit while seated in 11A. He suffered injuries to his chest, eyes, and feet and is now recovering in hospital.
Air India confirmed, *“The sole survivor is being treated in a hospital,”* adding that the flight carried 169 Indian, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian national.
In a strange twist, Owen Jackson, a father from Essex, had originally been booked on that same flight and would have sat in Ramesh’s exact seat. A change in his work schedule delayed his return. *“It’s a shock. I’m more grateful than anything else—it’s such a weird coincidence,”* Jackson said.
His wife Phillipa recalled the fear of not hearing from him when news broke. *“It was surreal… like being in a dream,”* she said. *“My heart really goes out to the victims and their families.”*
Investigators have now recovered both black boxes from the wreckage to determine what caused the crash.
