A 39-year-old British woman, Mary Gavin, was found alive after drifting for four days in the Mediterranean Sea. She had rented a 15-foot motorboat from the port of La Savina in Formentera on Tuesday and was expected to return it by Wednesday at 6 p.m. When she didn’t return, friends alerted authorities.

“A search operation was launched which continued throughout the day yesterday,” said police. The extensive rescue involved Spanish coastguard boats and helicopters, Civil Guard diving teams, and police investigators.

She was discovered on June 22 around 5 p.m. by a boat between Ibiza and Valencia. “The British woman who vanished after hiring a boat in Formentera… has been found alive,” a Civil Guard spokesman confirmed.

Her boat, a Quicksilver 475 Axess with a Mercury outboard motor, was towed to Ibiza. She was taken to a hospital in Valencia, but as of the next morning, her condition was still unclear.

No official statement from the Civil Guard has been issued yet.
