What to do in the first 10 minutes if US is hit with nuclear bomb as WW3 fears grow

Amid rising fears of World War 3, experts have shared critical survival tips in the event of a nuclear strike. The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) warns, *“A nuclear detonation… may result in mass casualties,”* but survival is possible with the right actions.

If a blast occurs, you may have *“10 minutes or more to find an adequate shelter before fallout arrives.”* The safest option is to get inside a brick or concrete building or go underground—such as in basements or subways. The ICRP shares the example of Eizo Nomura, who survived Hiroshima’s bombing in 1945 because he was in a basement near ground zero.

Nuclear fallout—the radioactive dust after an explosion—can cause *“radiation sickness, cancer, and possibly death.”* Sheltering properly during those first minutes is key.

The urgency comes after the US bombed three major nuclear sites in Iran—Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. President Trump called the strikes a *“spectacular military success,”* but Iran’s foreign minister warned of *“everlasting consequences.”*

Experts believe Iran is close to developing nuclear weapons, with watchdog reports saying it could produce enough enriched uranium for several bombs *“in as little as two to three days.”*

Tensions remain dangerously high.
