12-year-old girl dies of rare cancer—parents noticed worrying sign as she brushed teeth

Twelve-year-old Beth Phelps was a healthy and active child until her parents noticed a lump on her shoulder while she was brushing her teeth. A doctor’s visit revealed a 7cm lesion on her lung—Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer. “She had no symptoms that stood out,” her father Ben said.

Beth underwent intense treatment, including surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, and was eventually declared cancer-free. But in June 2022, she began experiencing shoulder pain. Tests showed the cancer had returned in her other lung. This time, the prognosis was worse.

Beth passed away on October 3, 2022. Her parents chose palliative care to keep her comfortable in her final weeks. Despite her fear of needles, Beth showed incredible strength. “We’d never heard of Ewing sarcoma before,” Ben said. “We miss Beth every day.”

To honor her, Ben is cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise funds for the Bone Cancer Research Trust. His goal is to support research for kinder treatments and better survival rates.

Beth’s memory drives her family’s mission. “She is our inspiration,” Ben shared.
