Firefighters killed by sniper after being lured to fire

A tragic ambush unfolded Sunday on Canfield Mountain in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, when firefighters responding to a brush fire were shot. Two firefighters were killed and one critically injured. Authorities believe the fire was set intentionally to lure them in.

A panicked voice over the radio said, *“Everybody’s shot up here.”* Fire crews had arrived around 1:30 p.m. and were fired upon about 30 minutes later. Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris said even his officers came under sniper fire.

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) confirmed two members were killed and one remained in surgery. They condemned the attack as a *“heinous act of violence.”*

Later, a SWAT team found the suspected shooter dead on the mountain with a firearm nearby. The FBI and Homeland Security are investigating whether this was a planned ambush.

The event shocked the nation. Former Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis compared the scene to a battlefield. Idaho Governor Brad Little called it a *“direct assault”* on first responders and urged people to pray for the victims and families.
