A powerful 8.2 magnitude earthquake hit the Alaskan Peninsula late Wednesday, about 91 km from Perryville and 35 km deep. “Tsunami sirens were activated in Kodiak and other coastal areas,” prompting precautionary evacuations.

The US National Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for southern Alaska, from Hinchinbrook Entrance to Unimak Pass. Although warnings briefly extended to Hawaii and Guam, they were later canceled after no significant threat was found.

Governor Mike Dunleavy confirmed that the state’s emergency operations center was activated. No immediate damage or casualties were reported.

At least eight aftershocks followed, including two above magnitude 6.0, suggesting continued seismic activity. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, along with agencies in Japan and New Zealand, monitored potential risks to other coastlines.
