After a powerful earthquake hit Mexico, frightened survivors in Jamiltepec spent the night outside or in cars, afraid of aftershocks damaging their already weakened homes.
Tragically, another disaster followed. A military helicopter carrying top officials assessing the damage lost control while landing and crashed onto several vehicles filled with survivors.
According to the Oaxaca state prosecutor’s office, *“fourteen individuals on the ground lost their lives,”* including at least three children. Over 20 others were injured. Interior Secretary Alfonso Navarrete and Governor Alejandro Murat were aboard the helicopter but suffered only minor injuries.
Navarrete said the Blackhawk helicopter lost control *“approximately 100 feet above the ground,”* calling the event *“regrettable”* but noting it was fortunate there wasn’t *“greater loss of human lives.”*
On Saturday, Defense Secretary Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda visited the crash site and took full responsibility, stating, *“This tragedy arose from our desire to assist the community.”* He promised help with rebuilding homes and providing further aid.
