At least 61 people have died in a massive fire at the six-storey Corniche Hypermarket Mall in Kut, Iraq. A survivor said the fire began when “an air conditioning unit exploded.” The mall had just recently opened and was filled with shoppers, including families.
The fire started on the first floor and quickly spread, engulfing the entire building. “Harrowing footage” showed people trapped on the roof as flames rose. It’s still unclear if they were rescued.
Firefighters managed to save some people, and ambulances transported the injured to hospitals until 4 a.m. Local media said searches for survivors continued into the morning.
Photos from the aftermath reveal a completely burned-out and blackened structure. A medical source reported “many unidentified bodies,” including men, women, and children.
According to Iraq’s interior ministry, “The tragic fire claimed the lives of 61 innocent citizens, most of whom suffocated in bathrooms, and among them 14 charred bodies yet to be identified.”
