A Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Uttara area on Monday, killing at least 16 people, most of them children. Over 100 others were injured, with 83 needing hospital care.
The crash happened during school hours, sparking panic. “Smoke and fire” were seen rising as “hordes of kids frantically” ran to escape, according to video footage. The Bangladesh Army confirmed the F-7 BGI aircraft was part of the Air Force. Interim leader Muhammad Yunus promised full support and a thorough investigation, calling the loss “irreparable.”
Local reports suggest the plane hit the college canteen’s roof.
The tragedy comes just weeks after a devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad, India, where an Air India Dreamliner hit a medical college hostel, killing 260 people—241 onboard and 19 on the ground. Preliminary investigations found both engines shut down seconds after takeoff. A cockpit recording captured a pilot asking, “Why did you cut off the fuel?” The other replied, “I did not.”
The report noted that “the fuel cutoff switches transitioned from RUN to CUTOFF… with a time gap of 01 sec,” but investigators have not determined whether this was due to pilot error or a technical fault.
