At least five people, including a pregnant woman, died after a ferry carrying over 280 people caught fire near North Sulawesi, Indonesia, on Sunday. The KM Barcelona VA was traveling from Talaud to Manado when flames broke out around noon. Passengers were seen jumping into the sea in panic, many wearing life jackets.
“Her body is now on land,” said Nuriadin Gumeleng, confirming the death of the pregnant woman. A 2-month-old baby, who had inhaled seawater, survived and is now stable.
Although the ferry manifest listed 280 passengers and 15 crew, over 575 people had been rescued by Monday, according to authorities. “We are burning at sea… we need help… fast,” passenger Abdul Rahmad Agu pleaded in a Facebook video. He later said thick smoke spread fast and that fishermen helped save children first.
Commander Denih Hendrata said the evacuation involved three navy ships and local fishermen. Navy officials believe overcrowding may have worsened the situation.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. This tragedy underscores ongoing safety issues in Indonesia’s maritime transport system.
