WHAT ARE FIBROPAPILLOMAS AND WHY DO THEY APPEAR ON THE SKIN?

Cutaneous fibropapillomas are harmless skin growths that often appear in areas prone to friction, such as the neck, armpits, eyelids, groin, or under the breasts. They are “soft, painless, and either skin-colored or slightly darker,” and may become irritated by rubbing or pressure.

Though noncancerous, changes like “bleeding, rapid growth, or color changes” should be checked by a doctor. The exact cause is unclear, but risk factors include frequent friction, genetics, hormonal changes, obesity, and conditions like type 2 diabetes. These growths are more common with age.

Treatment isn’t usually needed, but some choose removal for cosmetic reasons or discomfort. Options include “cauterization (burning), cryotherapy (freezing), and surgical excision.”

Removing them at home is strongly discouraged, as it can “lead to infection, bleeding, or scarring.”

In short, fibropapillomas are common and typically harmless. If needed, safe removal should be done with a doctor’s guidance.
