A 32-year-old woman, identified only as Mandy K., was seriously injured after jumping into a polar bear enclosure at the Berlin Zoo during feeding time. She climbed over a fence, hedges, and a wall to enter the cage.
“She leaped over the bars as the bear was being fed,” and was attacked before zookeepers could intervene. Despite efforts from six staff members to distract the animals, one of the bears bit her repeatedly on the arms, legs, and back.
Zookeepers managed to scare the bear off and rescue her. She was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery. “The 32-year-old woman is now recovering in the hospital following surgery to repair her wounds.”
Reports later revealed that Mandy K. is a teacher who had become deeply distressed after failing to find a job.
