**What Your Tongue Says About Your Health**
Changes in your tongue can signal underlying health issues. One third of U.S. cancers are preventable through lifestyle changes, and oral health is a key part of that.
**White Coating (Top Left)**
Possible Cause: *Oral thrush (Candida overgrowth)*
Symptoms include a “thick, white or yellow coating,” bad breath, and discomfort. Causes range from poor hygiene to antibiotic use.
**Tip:** “Brush your tongue gently,” rinse with saltwater, avoid sugar, and eat probiotic-rich foods.
**Red, Smooth Tongue (Top Right)**
Possible Cause: *Vitamin B12, folic acid, or iron deficiency*
You may feel burning and see a glossy surface.
**Tip:** Eat more eggs, dairy, spinach, and lentils. “Consider B-complex supplements.”
**Cracked or Grooved Tongue (Bottom Left)**
Possible Cause: *Fissured or geographic tongue*
Often harmless, but grooves can trap food and cause discomfort.
**Tip:** Stay hydrated, clean your tongue, and avoid spicy foods.
**Purple or Dark Tongue (Bottom Right)**
Possible Cause: *Poor circulation or B2 deficiency*
Look for cold hands and fatigue.
**Tip:** Exercise, eat a B-rich diet, and seek help if symptoms persist.
**See a doctor if:** symptoms last over 1–2 weeks, pain, swelling, or trouble breathing occurs.
