Even when turned off, some kitchen appliances can still spark fires overnight. According to the NFPA, cooking-related fires are the top cause of home fires. Licensed electrician Corey Hannahs warns: *“Appliances that produce heat without auto shut-off are especially risky.”*
Experts recommend unplugging the following five appliances before bed:
**1. Toaster**
Toasters can spark from food debris or damaged cords. The CPSC notes, *“Even when not in use, plugged-in toasters draw power and can trigger electrical arcs.”*
**2. Coffee Maker**
Warming plates stay hot for hours. Older models may lack auto shut-off. Jason Altshuler adds that even modern models *“use a few watts while idle,”* which can build heat.
**3. Microwave Oven**
Old or faulty units can overheat due to internal power draw or surges, even when they seem off. CPSC warns: *“Unattended, plugged-in appliances may create unnecessary risk.”*
**4. Air Fryer/Countertop Oven**
These reach high temperatures and can restart unintentionally if timers fail. LAFD advises unplugging all heat-generating devices.
**5. Electric Kettle/Hot Plate**
These can overheat or boil dry. USFA urges: *“Unplug small appliances when you are not using them.”*
**Final tip:** “It takes less than a minute… but that minute could save a life,” says Hannahs. Always unplug heat-generating devices before bed.
