Ridges on your nails might reveal more than just aging or wear. Dr. Ross Perry, a skin expert at Cosmedics, says they can indicate issues like “a lack of Vitamin A,” low calcium, or protein. “A severe iron deficiency can cause noticeable changes,” he added.
However, most nail ridges are harmless. “Common habits such as picking at your nails” or aging often cause minor imperfections. The NHS confirms that issues like brittle or discolored nails are usually not signs of serious illness.
But Dr. Perry warns that “severe, deep ridges” could signal health conditions like kidney disease or diabetes. If you notice dramatic changes, it’s worth checking with a doctor.
Other red flags include misshapen, discolored, or detached nails, and pain, redness, or swelling around the nail—these could suggest infections like paronychia or an ingrown nail.
The NHS also advises seeing a podiatrist if nails are too tough to cut or hard to reach. If you’re concerned, it’s best to visit your GP. As Dr. Perry suggests, paying attention to your nails can help catch health issues early.
