On a quiet Sunday morning, Ryan Finley tried waking his wife, Jill, but she didn’t respond. “I went to wake Jill up, which is a miracle in itself as I never, ever, do that on Saturday mornings,” he said. Fearing something was wrong, he called 911 and performed CPR.
Jill had suffered cardiac arrest and was placed in a coma. Doctors later told Ryan, “pray for your wife,” signaling how grave the situation was. For 14 days, Ryan stayed by her side, reading Bible passages, hoping she’d recover. With no signs of improvement, doctors advised taking her off life support.
Ryan made the heartbreaking decision, expecting to say goodbye. But five hours after the machines were turned off, a nurse said, “I think you need to come in, she’s talking.” Jill’s first words: “Get me out of here. I want to go home.”
She passed cognitive tests and even asked to eat at her favorite restaurant. “God. Divine intervention,” Ryan said, crediting her recovery. Though Jill had to relearn basic tasks, she and Ryan grew even closer.
Jill supports his past decision: “I don’t want to live like a vegetable.” Now, Ryan says, “If she kicks me back at night, I know we’re OK.”
