Donald Trump is reportedly considering reclassifying marijuana in the US from a Schedule I to a Schedule III drug. Speaking at a \$1 million-a-ticket fundraiser in New Jersey, he allegedly said, *“We need to look at that. That’s something we’re going to look at.”* At a later press conference, he added, *“We’re looking at reclassification… we’ll make a determination over… the next few weeks,”* calling it a *“very complicated”* decision.
Under current federal law, marijuana is illegal and classified as Schedule I, meaning it has a *“high potential for abuse”* and *“no currently accepted medical use.”* However, 24 states and Washington, DC have fully legalized it, while others allow only medical use. Rules vary by state, sometimes making possession legal but sales illegal.
Reclassifying cannabis to Schedule III would place it alongside drugs like ketamine and anabolic steroids, considered to have *“moderate to low potential”* for dependence.
Such a change would not fully legalize marijuana nationwide but would reduce restrictions, expand medical research opportunities, and potentially give cannabis businesses tax benefits.
If approved, the move could reshape America’s multibillion-dollar marijuana industry while keeping state-level regulations in place.
