A stroke happens when blood supply to the brain is blocked, leading to damage or even death. While it can strike suddenly, experts say the body often gives “warning signs while sleeping—especially for people over 40.” Recognizing these signs may help prevent a medical emergency.
1. Nighttime Headaches
“Severe and persistent headaches during sleep could be a warning sign of high blood pressure or an impending stroke.” If headaches wake you often or feel different from usual, check your blood pressure and limit alcohol or caffeine before bed.
2. Sleep Paralysis or Numbness
Sudden weakness, paralysis, or numbness—especially on one side—may indicate a mini-stroke (TIA). “If you wake up unable to move for a few seconds to minutes,” seek medical advice.
3. Loud Snoring and Sleep Apnea
Snoring may seem harmless, but “loud, irregular snoring and sleep apnea can significantly increase stroke risk.” Repeated pauses in breathing lower oxygen and raise blood pressure, stressing the brain.
Staying alert to these nighttime warnings, monitoring blood pressure, and seeking help early can greatly reduce stroke risk after 40.
