Authorities in Florence County have charged several Myrtle Beach teens in the June 24, 2025 death of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright after a late-night dispute in Johnsonville. Nine people are currently facing charges, with one more expected to surrender soon.
Investigators say the group acted together and are being treated as accomplices under South Carolina law. Among those charged is 19-year-old Devan R., arrested the day after the incident. Others, ages 17 to 18, face charges with some released on bond and others still in detention. Four additional suspects, including juveniles, have not had their roles publicly detailed.
Wright, a Johnsonville High School student-athlete who played football and baseball, is remembered as “kind, bright, and full of joy.” A celebration of life was held on July 3, and a fundraiser raised over $6,000 to cover funeral expenses.
Sheriff TJ Joye called the incident a “senseless tragedy” linked to personal conflicts.
As the investigation continues, the Johnsonville community mourns the loss of a young life, honoring Wright as someone who “brought light and laughter to all who knew him.”
