Oklahoma public schools will soon require teachers relocating from California and New York to pass a new “America First certification” exam. The test, created by PragerU, applies to all subjects and grade levels. Applicants must show knowledge of “the biological differences between females and males” and affirm Oklahoma’s history standards, including the disputed claim that “Democrats stole the 2020 presidential election from Donald Trump.”
Superintendent Ryan Walters defended the move, saying, “As long as I am superintendent, Oklahoma classrooms will be safeguarded.” He argued the test will block teachers who bring “radical leftist ideology” from other states. Sample questions ask educators to recall the first words of the U.S. Constitution, explain freedom of religion, and outline “God’s role in America’s founding.”
Critics, including AFT president Randi Weingarten, condemned it as “a MAGA loyalty test,” warning it could worsen teacher shortages.
Supporters counter it will restore “honest, pro-America education.” Walters said, “We are seeing a surge of educators reaching out.”
The exam has made Oklahoma a flashpoint in the national fight over education and ideology.
