Jerry Adler, best known as Hesh Rabkin on The Sopranos, has died at his New York City home at 96.
Born in Brooklyn in 1929, Adler grew up in a family tied to Jewish and Yiddish theater. He started his career behind the scenes as a Broadway stage manager, producer, and director, contributing to more than 50 shows, including My Fair Lady. He worked with stars such as Katharine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Julie Andrews, and Richard Burton.
Adler didn’t begin acting until his 60s, when “a casting director encouraged him” to try. His first role was in The Public Eye, leading to a three-decade career with guest spots on Northern Exposure, The Good Wife, The West Wing, and Broad City. He also appeared in films like Manhattan Murder Mystery.
On The Sopranos, Adler’s one-time part as Hesh Rabkin became a recurring role, making him “a fan favorite.”
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Joan Laxman, and their four daughters. Last year, he released his memoir Too Funny for Words.
