Donald Trump isn’t usually gentle with words — especially toward Taylor Swift. But her engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce brought a surprising response.
On August 26, Swift and Kelce announced on Instagram that after two years of dating, they’re officially engaged. The post drew more than 26 million likes in less than a day, with FOX News breaking into coverage and Google launching a golden confetti Easter egg.
Swift and Trump’s feud runs deep. In 2019, she called his presidency an “autocracy,” and in 2020 she vowed to vote him out after George Floyd’s killing. Trump hit back, once posting: “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” and mocking her looks while praising actress Sydney Sweeney.
Given this history, reporters asked for his reaction. At first, Trump quipped, “Well, I wish him a lot of luck.” But then he softened, saying: “I think he’s a great player, a great guy, and I think that she’s a terrific person. So, I wish them a lot of luck.”
Even her fiercest critic offered congratulations.
