Why Sleeping on Your Left Side Could Improve Your Health and Well-Being

Most people see sleep as a way to recharge, but “the position we choose each night can actually influence our health.” Research suggests that resting on the left side may support the brain, digestion, and circulation.

One benefit is linked to the brain. Sleeping on the left side may boost the body’s cleansing system, helping it “clear away byproducts that build up during the day.” This natural process is connected to long-term cognitive health and clearer thinking.

Digestion can also improve. Because of how the stomach and pancreas are placed, lying left may “encourage smoother digestion and reduce discomfort such as occasional heartburn.” Many find it helps them rest more comfortably at night.

Circulation is another advantage. Blood flows more freely when lying on the left, which may support heart health and make breathing easier.

No position works for everyone—some prefer switching sides or lying on their back. Still, “if you’re curious about making a small change with big potential payoffs, try sleeping on your left side.” You might wake up feeling more refreshed and balanced.
